Omegle vs OmeTV: are they the same thing?

A woman smiling on a one-on-one video call on ometv.me, which is neither Omegle nor OmeTV ometv.me · Matched

Short answer

No. Omegle was a random chat site that shut down on November 8, 2023. OmeTV is a different random video chat, run by a different company, that is still operating. The names sound alike and OmeTV calls itself an Omegle alternative, but one never became the other.

Omegle vs OmeTV: a closed old computer next to a phone running a video call — two separate services

What Omegle was

Omegle launched in 2009. Its founder, Leif K-Brooks, built it around a simple idea: talk to a random stranger, no account, no profile. It started with text, added video, and later let people add interest tags so the pairing wasn’t completely blind.

For more than a decade it was the name people reached for when they meant “random chat”. That is why it still gets searched so often, years after it stopped working.

On November 8, 2023, Omegle closed. The home page was replaced by a long letter from K-Brooks explaining that running the site had become unsustainable. There was no successor, no transfer of users and no official replacement. It simply ended.

What OmeTV is

OmeTV is a random video chat service that runs on the web and as a mobile app. According to its own site, you can choose a country, set your gender, or use a couple mode with a friend, and there is also a social side where people post photos and gain followers.

The company behind it is Bad Kitty’s Dad, LDA, based in Portugal, and the copyright line on its site goes back to 2015 — well before Omegle shut down. So OmeTV was not built to replace Omegle after the fact; it was already a separate product competing in the same space.

Why people mix them up

Three things do most of the work:

  • The name. “Ome” at the front reads like a shortened Omegle. Plenty of chat sites use the same trick, so the prefix tells you nothing about ownership.
  • The label. OmeTV describes itself as an Omegle alternative. People skim that as “the new Omegle”.
  • The timing. When Omegle closed, a lot of its users went searching for something similar at once, and OmeTV was one of the names already there.

None of this is unusual. After a big service closes, its name hangs around in search long after the product is gone, and anything that sounds similar collects the leftover curiosity.

Can you still use Omegle today?

No. There is no hidden version, no app that kept running and no new address. When a site today uses the word Omegle in its name, its title or its ads, it is a different service borrowing a familiar word, whoever runs it.

That isn’t a reason to avoid those sites. It is a reason to read them on their own terms. Check who runs a site, what it asks you to fill in, and what it charges for, rather than assuming it inherited anything from Omegle — rules, moderation or anything else. The name tells you about the marketing, not about the product.

The same goes for OmeTV. It is its own product with its own rules and its own owner, and it is worth judging that way rather than as “Omegle, continued”.

How to choose a random video chat now

Since there is no “real” Omegle to go back to, the useful question is what you actually want from the next site. A few things separate them more than their names do:

  1. Blind pairing or choosing. Some sites connect you to whoever is online; others let you pick from photos or filters.
  2. Browser or app. If you don’t want to install anything, stick to sites that work in a browser.
  3. How much you have to fill in. Some want a login, some only an age confirmation, some nothing at all to start.
  4. What, if anything, is paid. Free-to-start is common; read what money buys before assuming everything is free.
  5. Report and block during the call. A button you can reach mid-conversation is worth more than a contact form.

Where these facts come from

  • Omegle’s shutdown and its founder’s farewell letter: omegle.com, which has shown that letter since November 2023.
  • OmeTV’s operator and the start year in its copyright line: the footer of ome.tv.
  • Background on both services: the Wikipedia articles on Omegle and OmeTV.

Where ometv.me fits

ometv.me is a separate, independent service. It is not Omegle, it is not OmeTV, and it has no connection to either of them or their owners. Accounts, coins and users are not shared with anyone.

What it does is narrow: one-to-one video chat with women who are online, in the browser. You can start without a sign-up form, the browser asks for your camera and microphone only when you match, and report and block stay on screen during the call. Calls use coins billed by the minute, with the packs shown in the wallet before you buy.

FAQ

Is OmeTV the same as Omegle?

No. Omegle was a random chat site launched in 2009 by Leif K-Brooks and shut down on November 8, 2023. OmeTV is a separate random video chat service run by a different company, Bad Kitty’s Dad, LDA in Portugal. It describes itself as an Omegle alternative, which is where the confusion comes from, but it was never part of Omegle.

Did Omegle turn into OmeTV?

No. Omegle did not rebrand or move anywhere when it closed; its home page was replaced by a letter from its founder explaining the shutdown. OmeTV already existed before then as its own service.

Why does OmeTV sound like Omegle?

The “Ome” prefix echoes Omegle, and OmeTV markets itself as an Omegle alternative. Many random chat sites borrow the same naming pattern, so a similar name says nothing about who owns a site.

Is ometv.me connected to Omegle or OmeTV?

No. ometv.me is an independent 1-on-1 video chat service. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Omegle, OmeTV, or their owners.

What can I use now that Omegle is gone?

There are plenty of random video chat sites, and they differ more than their names suggest — some pair you blind, some let you choose, some want an account. We compare six of them in our guide to the best OmeTV alternatives in 2026.
